Why Eat Whole Wheat ?

From TV, Friends, Family, Magazines, and a long list of other sources, we hear that Whole Wheat is Healthy. We should choose whole wheat bread as opposed to regular white bread, and eat whole grain cereals, etc. etc. While these tips will help us to increase the health aspects of our diet, they still leave us wondering Why. And I find that when I don’t know why I should do something, often times I do not do it. I guess I need to be motivated.

Truthfully I eat whole wheat breads, and other whole grain foods because I like the taste, but the more I researched into foods cooked with whole wheat flour, the more motivation I found. And in a time where “Health Food” is sold at nearly every supermarket, we even find the benefits of whole wheat being promoted on our children’s cereal.

So with this Pro Whole Wheat craze that is sweeping the United States I figured there had to be something to it. And as it turns out, there is.

Ideally 3 servings of whole grain a day is what you want to eat, though as little as one has been shown to be beneficial. And when I say beneficial, I am talking about saving your life as well as making it a whole lot more comfortable.

The top three benefits in the saving your life category are reducing the risk of three life threatening problems; Stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, and Heart Disease. And topping the list of making your life more comfortable are healthier blood pressure, less gum disease and tooth loss, reduction of inflammatory disease, and healthier carotid arteries. That is a fairly significant list of health benefits from eating 3 servings of whole grains a day.

In the past couple years, whole grains are aviailble is several different options. There are a variety of foods with whole grains ranging from breads, cereals, frozen foods, and really something for every meal of the day. There are even organizations such as the Whole Grain Council that offers a stamp of approval that states the stamped food contains at least 8grams of whole grains per serving, or half of a serving of whole grains. So in other words, 6 servings of a food with the stamp will ensure you have received at least 3 servings of whole grains that day.

The list of benefits is quite high, and even for those who are on a Gluten Free diet whole grains are available and something that everyone should look to include in their diet.

 Did You Know ?

Many of Health is Wealth's products contain the Whole Grain Council stamp.  Our Chicken and Chicken-Free items that are Whole Wheat Breaded contain 18g of whole grains per serving, and our SproutBurgers contain 8 grams of gluten free whole grains.
